Four passengers who died in the August 17, 2025 boat accident at the Kojiyo village area of Goronyo Dam in Sokoto State, have been buried.
The National Emergency Management Agency said the burial followed the recovery of an additional body, bringing the total number of deaths to four.
No fewer than 41 persons were rescued from the accident, according to NEMA.
In a made available to journalists, NEMA explained that the rescue team also visited four villages of Takuske, Kwakwazu, Bari and Gamiha where many of the passengers on the ill-fated boat resided.
The visits, according to the agency, helped to verify the number of missing persons, confirm 16 survivors and commiserate with bereaved families.
The agency announced that the multi-agency search and rescue operation had been concluded, adding that the exercise was jointly conducted by NEMA, the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, the National Inland Waterways Authority, Goronyo Local Government Authority, and community divers.
NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, commended the rescue team for their diligence and praised stakeholders for their cooperation throughout the operation.
