When is Hispanic Heritage Month?
National Hispanic American Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a 30-day period by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The 30-day period also includes independence days for Mexico and Chile.
Spirit struggling, other low-cost airlines stepping up in Florida
On Aug. 29, Spirit filed for bankruptcy barely five months after leaving its last one, citing the need to restructure to “build a stronger foundation and future for our company.”
The carrier reported a net loss of about $246 million from March through mid-June. Spirit is also locked in a dispute with aircraft lessor AerCap Holdings over a deal covering 36 Airbus planes due for delivery between 2027 and 2028.
Spirit, whuch had previously announced plans to furlough nearly 300 pilots effective Nov. 1, said it would cut its fleet to significantly lower its debt and lease obligations. The airline promptly dropped service to 11 cities and other airlines quickly moved to pick up the slack.
Within days of Spirit’s bankruptcy announcement, Frontier Airlines announced 42 new routes, many of them at Spirit’s hub at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). JetBlue also moved in, with 9 new routes from Fort Lauderdale. Allegiant Air announed on Sept. 9 it was adding a Fort Lauderdale-Chattanooga, Tennesee route that Spirit was dropping.
