Spirit Airlines, currently dealing with its second bankruptcy in a year, announced a new promotion for Hispanic Heritage Month with special flight deals to “popular leisure destinations brimming with Latin culture” starting at $54.99 one way. Two of those locations are in the Sunshine State, according to a Sept. 15 release.

The destinations the Dania Beach-based carrier says offer “some of the greatest Hispanic cuisine, art, history and attractions in the U.S.” include Miami, Tampa, San Antonio, San Juan, Los Angeles and New York.

“We’re all about helping our Guests stretch their travel dollars so they can experience new cultures and places more often,” said Rana Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines. “Travelers looking to explore the vibrant traditions and cuisines of America’s Hispanic cultural hubs can enjoy our high-value travel options to great destinations.”

Spirit flight deals to Latin cultural hubs

Spirit’s limited-time offer includes:

  • Miami (MIA), with flights starting at $58.99 one-way

    • “Hispanic culture is at the heart of Miami, shaping the city’s cuisine, art, and traditions,” Spirit said in the release. “Visitors can indulge in authentic Latin food on the historic ‘Calle Ocho’ in Little Havana, experience traditional Cuban cigar shops and art galleries, go salsa dancing to live music, and enjoy the city’s beautiful beaches.”

  • Tampa (TPA), with flights starting at $54.99 one way

    • “Rich in Latin culture and flavors, Tampa’s historic Ybor City boasts authentic Cuban cuisine, hand-rolled cigars, vibrant festivals, and landmarks dedicated to Hispanic traditions” Spirit said. “Travelers can dive into cultural and historical sites while also enjoying outdoor activities like the Tampa Riverwalk, watersports, and theme parks.”

  • San Antonio (SAT), with flights starting at $68.99 one way

    • Spirit cited the Hispanic heritage in the largest Mexican market in the U.S., the historic Spanish colonial missions, Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine and the San Antonio River Walk.

  • San Juan (SJU), with flights starting at $108.99 one way

    • For this Puerto Rico destination, Spirit spoke of the centuries-old Spanish fortress, flavorful Puerto Rican cuisines, art museums and vibrant murals, bomba dancing, and lively festivals.

  • Los Angeles (LAX), flights starting at $87.99 one way

    • LA has a Mexican market, live music at Mariachi Plaza, authentic Mexican food, and Latin art in museums across the city, Spirit said.

  • New York (LGA), with flights starting at $59.99 one way

    • Spirit listed world-class events, parades, and museums, authentic Latin cuisines, and vibrant neighborhoods like Washington Heights, Jackson Heights, the Bronx, and Queens.

The fare deals are subject to a 21-day advance purchase, valid for booking on Sept. 15 through Sept. 22 for travel from Oct. 15 to Nov. 19, 2025, the airline said. No blackout dates.

Spirit recently announced new routes from Fort Lauderdale to Belize City and Grand Cayman, between Fort Lauderdale and Macon, Georgia and new service to Key West.

When is Hispanic Heritage Month?

National Hispanic American Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a 30-day period by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The 30-day period also includes independence days for Mexico and Chile.

Spirit struggling, other low-cost airlines stepping up in Florida

On Aug. 29, Spirit filed for bankruptcy barely five months after leaving its last one, citing the need to restructure to “build a stronger foundation and future for our company.”

The carrier reported a net loss of about $246 million from March through mid-June. Spirit is also locked in a dispute with aircraft lessor AerCap Holdings over a deal covering 36 Airbus planes due for delivery between 2027 and 2028.

Spirit, whuch had previously announced plans to furlough nearly 300 pilots effective Nov. 1, said it would cut its fleet to significantly lower its debt and lease obligations. The airline promptly dropped service to 11 cities and other airlines quickly moved to pick up the slack.

Within days of Spirit’s bankruptcy announcement, Frontier Airlines announced 42 new routes, many of them at Spirit’s hub at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). JetBlue also moved in, with 9 new routes from Fort Lauderdale. Allegiant Air announed on Sept. 9 it was adding a Fort Lauderdale-Chattanooga, Tennesee route that Spirit was dropping.

Which Florida airports does Spirit fly out of?

Spirit currently services the following Florida airports:

  • Key West (EYW) (scheduled to begin in November)
