‘Sports Betting Not a Job’

Nigerian singer Naira Marley has issued a strong caution to young Nigerians about the risks of sports betting.

Taking to his X handle on Sunday and cited by PUNCH Online on Monday, the artist warned against relying on betting as a primary source of income, emphasising its unpredictability and potential to become harmful when overused.

His comments come amid rising concerns about the impact of gambling addiction on Nigeria’s youth, especially in the face of economic hardship and unemployment.

Naira Marley, in his warning, also spoke about the dangers of being addicted and reliant on betting.

“Football bet no be work bro. Please stop before they finish you. You are far too smart to be the only thing standing in your way,” he wrote.

Sports betting has seen a massive surge in popularity among Nigerian youths in recent years, driven by widespread access to smartphones, internet connectivity, and the growing appeal of football.

With rising unemployment and limited economic opportunities, many young people turn to betting platforms as a quick fix for financial gain.

However, this growing trend has also sparked concerns about addiction, financial instability, and mental health challenges.

Reports of young Nigerians falling into debt or engaging in criminal activities due to betting losses have become more frequent. Despite warnings from public health experts and religious leaders, the betting industry in Nigeria continues to thrive, with aggressive marketing and celebrity endorsements.
