Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced that the Veterans Land Board (VLB) will mark its 10th consecutive year at the State Fair of Texas, offering resources to military families from September 26 through October 19, 2025.
The VLB’s presence at one of Texas’ largest public gatherings represents a key outreach effort for state veterans’ benefits that include land loans, home loans, and long-term care facilities.
“As VLB Chairwoman, serving our Veterans is my top priority and I am honored to ensure our Veterans are always supported in return for their diligent military service,” said Buckingham. “I am thrilled the VLB will have a daily presence at the State Fair of Texas, helping to educate the public about the numerous benefits offered to our Veterans, Military Members, and their families.”
The VLB booth will be located in the GO TEXAN Pavilion throughout the fair’s 24-day run. Representatives will provide information about Texas’ comprehensive veterans benefits package.
The state’s land loan program remains unique nationally, offering veterans financing to purchase property with just a 5% down payment. The program provides favorable interest rates for parcels of one acre or larger.
Home loans through the VLB allow eligible veterans to purchase residences with little or no down payment. The program, established in 1983, offers interest rates below market rates.
Veterans can also access home improvement loans for repairs and upgrades to existing properties. The 1986 program provides financing at reduced rates for qualified military members.
Texas operates 10 state veterans’ homes providing long-term care. Veterans with 70% or higher service-connected disabilities typically qualify for free residence.
The state also manages veterans’ cemeteries in Abilene, Corpus Christi, Killeen, and Mission. A new cemetery in Lubbock is scheduled to open in December 2025.
VLB outreach specialists offer consultations via Zoom, telephone, or in-person meetings. A call center operates weekdays at 1-800-252-8387.
Quarterly land sales occur each January, April, July, and October. Veterans can bid on state-offered tracts or use VLB loans for other qualifying Texas properties.
Buckingham emphasized her hope that fair attendance will increase program awareness. “It is my hope that many more Texans will learn about our program and take advantage of the VLB’s helpful services provided.”
