President Trump has wasted no time in revamping parts of the White House to his liking since he’s been back in office.

And of course, there’s the plans for the 90,000-square-foot, $250-million ballroom addition, which construction crews began removing trees to clear space for back in September.

For some context, the area planned for the ballroom is right here, off the East Wing:

The East Wing of the White House contains the first lady’s office, the president’s theater, the visitor’s entrance, and the East Colonnade.
Well, even though President Trump previously said in July that the ballroom wouldn’t “interfere with the current building,” this week, crews began demolishing part of the East Wing as construction continued.

And this larger view that shows the overall demolition so far:
Unsurprisingly, many folks were generally pretty unhappy with the new development. “No president should have the authority to bulldoze an entire section of the fucking White House,” one person said.
“Donald Trump tearing down an iconic symbol of America and replacing it with a gaudy monument to himself couldn’t be more on brand for his presidency,” said another.
“It’s kind of wild that you can announce plans and bulldoze parts of the White House faster than you can get a permit to build a bike lane or a duplex in most of the country.”
“IT’S NOT *HIS* FUCKING HOUSE.”
Politicians weighed in on the changes as well. Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger said, “This is insane. If Obama did this the GOP would impeach.”
Senator Tina Smith said, “Seeing the White House torn apart is really emblematic of the times we’re in.”
And finally, Gavin Newsom said, “Ripping apart the White House just like he’s ripping apart the Constitution.”
