A tense standoff on the Third Mainland Bridge that started earlier on Monday has ended, and order has been restored, the Lagos State Police Command said.

PUNCH Online reported that residents of the Oworonshoki community blocked a section of the Third Mainland Bridge to protest the demolition of buildings in the area.

The residents are occupants of the unapproved buildings along the Iyana Oworosonki coastline who were displaced on Saturday after a combined enforcement team from the Lagos State Government commenced demolition.

The affected residents had reportedly been served a one-month quit notice but refused to vacate, resulting in a protest that caused gridlock in the area.

Providing an update on his social media account, the Command Deputy Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, said normalcy returned after Commissioner CP Olohundare Jimoh addressed the protesters.

“Calm has been fully restored on the 3rd Mainland Bridge after the swift intervention of CP Olohundare Jimoh.

“The Lagos Police Commissioner personally visited the scene, ensured safety and order, and reopened the road. Traffic is now flowing smoothly,” Oluseyi wrote.
