Think you’ve heard it all when it comes to driving laws?

In Alabama, it’s illegal to drive blindfolded. Yes, someone thought that needed to be said.

According to car rental company Sixt, Alabama’s rule is just one of the world’s nine most bizarre driving laws. The list reveals that when it comes to road rules, the fine print can get strange.

Here’s what the Alabama law says about driving blindfolded.

Is it illegal to drive blindfolded in Alabama?

While it might sound like the setup to a viral stunt gone wrong, many sources claim it’s illegal to drive blindfolded in Alabama. But here’s the twist: no law says that outright.

What Alabama does have are broader laws that make blindfolding while driving illegal by default. Alabama Code Section 32-5A-190 defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle with “willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.” And under Section 32-5A-53, drivers can’t operate a car if their view is obstructed.

So, technically? Yes, blindfolds behind the wheel are a no-go.

What other weird driving laws are there in the world?

Sixt says these are the world’s weirdest laws involving cars:

  1. Russia: Driving a dirty vehicle is punishable with a fine

  2. Japan: Splashing pedestrians while driving can cost you money

  3. Minnesota: Gorillas have to ride in the front of the car

  4. Alabama: Driving while blindfolded is prohibited

  5. San Francisco: It is forbidden to clean your car with dirty underwear

  6. UK: You can’t urinate on someone else’s car

  7. 15 countries say you have to drive with your lights on 24 hours a day

  8. Germany: It is forbidden to stop on the roadway if you run out of gas

  9. Italy: It is forbidden to kiss in a car

Alabama is no stranger to weird laws on their books

Alabama’s law books are full of rules that range from oddly specific to downright head-scratching. Whether rooted in old traditions, moral codes or just plain bizarre logic, these laws are real, and some are still technically enforceable.

Some of the odd laws include:

  • It’s illegal to wear a fake mustache in church

  • Organizing a bear wrestling match and wrestling bears will land you in serious legal trouble

  • It is illegal to impersonate a priest (rethink that Halloween costume)
