President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman, Owelle Gilbert Chikelu, on the occasion of his 95th birthday on Saturday.
In a statement on Saturday issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described Chikelu’s life and career as a testimony of integrity, patriotism, and selfless service to Nigeria.
The President lauded the former Permanent Secretary, popularly referred to as “Super Permanent Secretary,” for his distinguished service in the ministries of Mines and Power, Economic Development and National Planning, Employment and Labour, and Petroleum Resources.
“You epitomised the true essence of public service in promoting peace, stability, and development. Many of the initiatives introduced during your stewardship continue to shape and inspire improved service delivery to this day,” Tinubu said.
The President noted that Chikelu’s 95-year journey has been filled with profound impact on humanity, stressing that his story remains a beacon for those aspiring to serve the country with “honour, responsibility, and accountability.”
He also highlighted the public presentation of Chikelu’s biography, “Owelle: The GPO Chikelu Story,” written by historian and archivist Nze Ed Keazor, which was launched in London on Saturday.
According to Tinubu, the book is a gift to the public and political office holders, offering invaluable lessons on patriotism and leadership.
“I celebrate you with great admiration, trusting that your story will continue to inspire generations,” Tinubu added.
Chikelu, who holds the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, is also the Owelle of Ichida, Owelle of Anaocha, and a Knight of St. Paul in the Anglican Communion.
