Tropical Storm Dexter is moving further away from the East Coast, but it’s still causing waves along the Delmarva coastline.

Dexter is moving into the North Atlantic, away from North America. It will strengthen and become an extratropical low later today through Friday. The cyclone is forecast to weaken beginning Friday night and Saturday.

There’s a high risk for rip currents from New York City down to the Outer Banks in North Carolina Aug. 7 and Aug. 8.

Are there other storms that will impact Delaware?

While Dexter moves away, there are still two remaining disturbances in the Atlantic basin that may develop into tropical cyclones. According to the National Hurricane Center, neither is a threat to land until next week. Here’s the forecast:

Disturbance 1

A weak area of low pressure, located a couple of hundred miles off the coast of the southeastern United States, is producing minimal shower and thunderstorm activity. Some slow tropical or subtropical development is possible as the storm moves northeastward off the East Coast. There’s a 30% chance the storm forms into a tropical cyclone over the next seven days.

Disturbance 2

A tropical wave over the central tropical Atlantic is producing disorganized shower activity. Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for gradual development in a few days, and a tropical depression could form late this weekend or early nextweek while the system moves northwest across the central tropical and subtropical Atlantic. There’s a 60% chance the storm forms into a tropical cyclone over the next seven days.

What is the Delaware weekend forecast?

The First State will have a near-perfect weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

  • New Castle County: Sunny skies with highs in the low to mid-80s are expected throughout the weekend. Nighttime lows will be in the low to mid-60s.

  • Kent County: Sunny skies with highs in the low 80s are expected through Sunday. Nighttime lows will be in the low 60s

  • Sussex County: Sunny skies with highs in the low 80s are expected through Sunday. Nighttime lows will be in the low 60s.

  • Rehoboth Beach: Perfect beach weather is expected for the weekend. Highs will be in the upper 70s with nighttime lows around 70.

  • Bethany Beach: Like Rehoboth, Bethany Beach will have highs in the upper 70s with nighttime lows around 70.

  • Lewes: If you want a warmer beach experience this weekend, Lewes will have temperatures in the low 80s this weekend with nighttime temperatures in the upper 60s.

When is hurricane season?

Hurricane season started on July 1 and runs through the end of November. The season typically peaks from August to October.

What is a rip current?

According to NOAA, rip currents are channeled currents of water that flow away from the shore out past the line of breaking waves. They form from water piling up between the breaking waves and the beach. As the water returns from the shore, it forms a narrow stream of water that moves quickly out to sea.

What to do in a rip current

According to the United States Lifesaving Association, swimmers should do the following:

  • Relax, rip currents don’t pull you under.

  • Don’t swim against the current.

  • You may be able to escape by swimming out of the current in a direction following the shoreline, or toward breaking waves, then at an angle toward the beach.

  • You may be able to escape by floating or treading water if the current circulates back toward shore.

  • If you feel you will be unable to reach shore, draw attention to yourself. If you need help, yell and wave for assistance.
