Truck, gunfire, flames: Michigan church attack

A quiet Sunday service in a Michigan Mormon church erupted into horror when a man drove his truck through the front doors, opened fire on worshippers, and set the building on fire, authorities said.

Police confirmed one person was killed and at least nine injured before the 40-year-old suspect was fatally shot in an exchange with officers. Federal investigators are helping comb through the charred building for more victims and evidence.

Witnesses described chaos as parishioners ran through smoke and flames. “We heard a big bang and the doors flew open and then everyone rushed out,” a survivor named Paula told local TV. “I can’t believe someone would do this to my church,”

The attack comes just a day after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the death of Russell M. Nelson, the faith’s 17th president and oldest-ever leader, who died at age 101. His passing adds a somber backdrop to the violence, leaving congregations nationwide grieving and shaken.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called the shooting “heartbreaking” and promised state resources to aid the investigation. President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi issued statements of condolence, and federal agencies including the FBI and ATF are now assisting local authorities.

Officials have not released the suspect’s name or motive. The fire left the building’s interior heavily damaged, delaying the collection of evidence and possible recovery of additional victims.

Church leaders urged members to stay calm as investigators work the scene. “Our hearts are broken for the victims and their families,” LDS spokesperson Irene Caso said in a statement, adding that the church is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
