A spokesperson for the Port of Portland, which oversees airport operations, told CNN that a Delta staff member reported the “hazardous item” to TSA, who notified police. Though the representative shared that no one was arrested and TSA and Delta “handled things from there.”
According to CNN, all passengers onboard were forced to deplane and go back through security out of an abundance of caution. The outlet reports it caused an about two-and-a-half hour delay.
In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Delta Air Lines apologized for the delay and confirmed they “elected to deplane and re-screen the aircraft.”
Jon Robertson, who was waiting for his family at Portland International Airport, tells local outlet KGW he’s surprised by the “oversight.”
“A meat cleaver — it’s hard to imagine that as an oversight. It’s really hard to imagine that they would miss that,” he said. “I don’t understand how that could have happened.”
In the past, he said, TSA has flagged small items on his keychain: “So, they’ve found these little things — but a meat cleaver, that’s a tough one.”
At this moment, it is unclear why the passenger brought the knife onboard.
TSA added that the agency is “reviewing the incident” and will “take appropriate corrective action that could include additional training of the security screening workforce.”
Representatives for TSA and the Port of Portland did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Earlier this year, TSA agents were stunned after catching a woman trying to smuggle two living turtles onto her flight.
On July 22, the agency shared photos on X taken at an airport’s security checkpoint showing the reptiles in a bin.
“We’re back with another desperate plea to stop hiding animals in weird places on your body before airport security,” the account wrote.
“According to the report… ‘Passenger divested two turtles from her breast area,’ ” they added.
A spokesperson for TSA told PEOPLE the incident happened back in April at Miami International Airport. The agency shared the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the incident.
