Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has raised concerns over what she described as rising prevalence of diabetes in the country, attributing the trend largely to the consumption of junk and highly processed foods.
Soludo, who is the founder of Healthy Living Initiative, urged Nigerians to rethink their dietary choices if they hope to confront diabetic threats.
In a statement to mark the 2025 World Diabetes Day on Friday, the wife of the governor stressed that adopting healthier lifestyles is a crucial step in reducing the burden of diabetes in the country.
World Diabetes Day is observed globally each year on November 14. The 2025 commemoration carries the theme, “Diabetes Across Life Stages.”
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, Soludo said, “Diabetes has found its way into many homes largely because we prefer junk and unhealthy foods instead of the natural, wholesome options available to us.
She said, “While routine medical check-ups are vital for early detection and management, lifestyle modification remains the first and most important line of defence.
“Lifestyle choices can kill or save. A large chunk of what we consume today is really killing us. We must pay closer attention to whatever goes into our bodies — food, drinks or anything else. This is where healthy living plays its biggest role.”
Highlighting the scope of the challenge, Soludo noted that official figures indicate over three million Nigerians currently live with diabetes, though the actual number is likely much higher due to undiagnosed cases.
She called for a collective effort in addressing the epidemic, saying, “Tackling diabetes in our communities is a task that demands both hands. Families, governments, and health stakeholders must intensify awareness and promote healthier habits.”
Through the Healthy Living Initiative, Mrs Soludo reaffirmed her commitment to advocating good nutrition, regular exercise, and disciplined lifestyles as sustainable strategies for reducing the impact of diabetes across all age groups.
