MARION, Va. (WAVY) — On Oct. 10, Virginia State Police unveiled their new Kodiak Airplane, which pays tribute to a deceased trooper named Lucas B. Dowell.
Dowell was a Chilhowie, VA native, having served in the department for five years before his death. He was killed while executing a search warrant in Cumberland County in 2019.

The plane displays the tail number N876VA, incorporating Dowell’s badge number, 876. Dowell’s relatives toured the plane and met with Dowell’s colleagues.
Virginia State Police are currently acquiring three Kodiak planes, with N876VA being the second of the three. The planes will fly out of Virginia State Police’s Lynchburg airbase.
