Mediaite founder Dan Abrams delivered a blistering assessment Friday as Attorney General Pam Bondi opened a sweeping investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s past associations, hours after President Donald Trump publicly urged her to pursue those linked to the disgraced financier.
The Justice Department’s announcement on Friday followed a congressional dump of Epstein emails on Wednesday, revealing his correspondence about and with prominent figures, including Trump and former President Bill Clinton as well as business leaders such as Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman.
On Friday, Trump wrote on Truth Social, insisting that the scrutiny of him was a “hoax involving Democrats” and that he planned to ask Bondi to examine Epstein’s “involvement and relationship” with Clinton and others “to determine what was going on with them, and him.”
Sharing a screengrab of Trump’s post, Bondi later announced on X that she had tapped U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to oversee the inquiry.
Reacting live on his Sirius XM show as the news dropped, Abrams read the statement aloud, saying: “She is just being a loyal soldier and doing exactly what she’s told to do.”
Abrams pointed out that the Southern District of New York, the office she tapped, already prosecuted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell and had been preparing Epstein’s case before his 2019 suicide. Most of the prosecutors from those cases, he stressed, have since departed. The new probe by the Justice Department, he said, marked a stark reversal of its previous stance that there was no basis for such an inquiry.
“Now remember the DOJ had initially said we did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties. Remember? That’s what they said in terms of why this was a dead story. So what’s the new predicate? What’s the new evidence?” Abrams asked.
He continued, “This is really unbelievable! Trump calls for it, and he gets it, and they have to completely backtrack on everything they’ve said up to that point. It’s just shocking. Shocking!”
Reflecting on comments he’d made on CNN’s NewsNight late Thursday, predicting that the Epstein saga “will be forgotten” by next year, Abrams said the move by Bondi ensured it was “not a story that’s gonna go away now.”
“If Trump wants to keep this in the news, it seems he will do that. And it’s hard to believe,” he reflected.
The timing comes days before the House is set to vote on releasing all federal files related to Epstein, after a bipartisan petition forced the matter to the floor.
