September 1 brought the start of meteorological fall. What’s next? The start of astronomical fall and then changing clocks for the end of daylight saving time.
The nights are getting longer again, and evening temperatures are dropping. Soon, leaves will start changing color, and the sun will set even earlier once we set our clocks back one hour.
When is daylight saving time this year? When does it begin and end in 2025? When do we have to change the clocks? Why do we do it? Is Ohio keeping daylight saving time? Here’s what to know.
When does the time change in 2025? When do the clocks change back?
Daylight saving time will end on Nov. 2, 2025, at 2 a.m., according to USA TODAY.
Additionally, daylight saving time will end slightly earlier in 2025 compared to other years. We turn the clocks back the first Sunday in November, so Nov. 2 is almost the earliest opportunity to fall back. In 2026, daylight saving time will end on Sunday, Nov. 1.
When did daylight saving time start this year?
This year, it began on March 9, 2025, at 2 a.m., according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Why do we have daylight saving time? Why do the clocks change?

What happens when daylight saving time ends?
When daylight saving time ends, it means it’s time to set our clocks back one hour.
Unlike spring and summer, when the Northern Hemisphere receives more sunlight, we have longer nights during the fall and winter. The sun will set earlier in the day for the remainder of the fall, thanks in part to the time change, making it darker earlier each day.
Before long, it will be time to start paying closer attention to the winter weather predictions for Ohio and the rest of the United States.
Will daylight saving time be eliminated in Ohio?
Ohio has attempted to make daylight saving time a permanent observation.
In 2023, Ohio’s House of Representatives passed a resolution, the Sunshine Uniformity Act of 2023, to urge Congress to permanently observe daylight saving time. Its status remains pending, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
The recently introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 6, introduced in Ohio’s 136th assembly, remains in committee as of September 2025.
At the federal level, the Sunshine Act of 2022 passed the U.S. Senate. This bill sought to make daylight saving time permanent. However, it was not adopted by the House of Representatives and needs to be reintroduced.
