When does school start? Central Ohio students head back to the classroom soon

For many children in central Ohio, the first day of school is almost here.

One Columbus school is already back; year-round Woodcrest Elementary School started July 28.

Here’s a look at when the rest of the area’s students go back:

When does school start for students in Franklin County?

  • Bexley City Schools: All students in grades 1-6 and 9, and a partial roster of kindergarteners will start on Aug. 14. All students in grades 1-12, and a partial roster of kindergarteners will start on Aug. 15.

  • Canal Winchester Local: All students in grades 1-6 and 9, and kindergarteners with last names A-G will start on Aug. 12. All students in grades 7-8 and 10-12, and kindergarteners with last names H-O will start on Aug. 13. Kindergarteners with last names P-Z will start on Aug. 14. All K-12 students will have started by Aug. 15.

  • Dublin City Schools: All students in grades 1-12 will start on Aug. 19. Kindergarteners will gradually start on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20.

  • Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools: All grades will start on Aug. 14.

  • Grandview Heights Schools: All grades will start on Aug. 13.

  • Groveport Madison Schools: All students in grades 1-6 and grade 9 will start on Aug. 11. Students in grades 7, 8 and 10-12 will start Aug. 12. Kindergarteners with last names A-L will start on Aug. 14 and kindergarteners with last names M-Z will start on Aug. 15.

  • Hamilton Local School District: All students will start Aug. 14.

  • Hilliard City Schools: All students will start Aug. 20.

  • New Albany-Plain Local Schools: Students in grades 1-12 with last names L-Z will start Aug. 18. Students in grades 1-12 with last names A-K will start Aug. 19. All preschoolers and kindergarteners will start Aug. 20.

  • Reynoldsburg City Schools: Students in kindergarten and grades 1-9 with last names A-K and all students in grades 10-12 will start Aug. 20. Students in kindergarten and grades 1-9 with last names L-Z will start Aug. 21. All students will be in classes Aug. 22.

  • South Western City Schools: Students in kindergarten and grades 1-3 with last names A-G and all students in grades 4-12 will start Aug. 20. Students in kindergarten and grades 1-3 with last names H-O will start Aug. 21. Students in kindergarten and grades 1-3 with last names P-Z will start Aug. 21.

  • Upper Arlington Schools: All students in grades 1-6 and grade 9 start Aug. 13. Kindergarten orientation is on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14. All students will be in classes come Aug. 15.

  • Westerville City Schools: All students in grades 1-6 and grade 9 start Aug. 13. Preschool starts Aug. 13 and Aug. 14. Kindergarten starts on Aug. 13, Aug. 14 and Aug. 15. All students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 14, and all students will be in classes by Aug. 18.

  • Whitehall City Schools: All students in grades 1-9 start Aug. 14 and students in grades 10-12 start Aug. 15. Kindergartener assessments will take place Aug. 19 and Aug. 20.

  • Worthington Schools: All students in grades 1-9 and all Linworth Experiential Program students start Aug. 13. All students in grades 10-12 start Aug. 14. Kindergarten assessments will take place Aug. 13-14, with kindergarteners starting Aug. 15.

When do Delaware County students start school again?

  • Big Walnut Local School District: Students with last names A-K start Aug. 13. Students with last names L-Z return Aug. 14. All students in kindergarten and grades 1-12 report on Aug. 15. All Early Learning Center students start Aug. 18. The Early Learning Center has no classes on Fridays.

  • Buckeye Valley Local: All students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 13. Kindergarteners with last names A-M start Aug. 13. while kindergarterns with last names N-Z start Aug. 14. All kindergarteners will be in class Aug. 15.

  • Delaware City Schools: All students return Aug. 13.

  • Olentangy Local School District: All students return Aug. 20.

When do students in Fairfield County go back to school?

  • Amanda-Clearcreek Local School District: All students start Aug. 12.

  • Berne Union Local School District: All students start Aug. 14.

  • Bloom-Carroll Local School District: All students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 20. Kindergarten assessments will take place Aug. 20 through Aug. 25. Kindergarteners with last names A-K will start Aug. 26 and kindergarteners with last names L-Z start Aug. 27.

  • Fairfield Union Local School District: All students return Aug. 15.

  • Lancaster City Schools: All students in grades 1-9 start Aug. 14 and all students in grades 10-12 start Aug. 15. Kindergarten students will be notified of staggered start dates.

  • Liberty Union-Thurston Local School District: All students return Aug. 13.

  • Pickerington Local School District: Students will have staggered start times across all district buildings. Students will start on Aug. 14, Aug. 15 or Aug. 18 based on their building, grade and last time. More information is available on the district website.

  • Walnut Township Local School District: All students start Aug. 18.

Columbus City Schools bus drops kids off at Woodcrest Elementary School for the first day of school on Jul 28, 2025. Woodcrest Elementary School is the district’s only year-round school.

When do classes start for most Licking County students?

  • Heath City Schools: All students start Aug. 19.

  • Newark City Schools: All students in grades 1-6 and grade 9 start Aug. 14. Students in grades 10-12 start Aug. 15. Kindergarteners will have individual testing on Aug. 14, Aug. 15 and Aug. 18. Kindergarteners will gradually start classes Aug. 19 through Aug. 21. The first full day for all kindergarteners will be Aug. 22.

  • Granville Exempted Village School District: Students in grades 1-6 with last names A-K start Aug. 20, while students with last names L-Z start Aug. 21. All students in grades 7-12 start on Aug. 20. Kindergarteners should follow the schedule in their staggered start letters.

  • Johnstown-Monroe Local School District: All students start Aug. 13.

  • Lakewood Local School District: All preschool students and students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 20. All kindergarteners start Aug. 25.

  • Licking Heights Local School District All students in grades 1-9 and kindergarteners with last names A-K start Aug. 14. All students in grades 10-12 and kindergarteners with last names L-Z start Aug. 15. Preschool students start Aug. 18.

  • Licking Valley Local School District: All students start Aug. 20.

  • North Fork Local School District: All students return Aug. 18.

  • Northridge Local School District: All students start Aug. 19.

  • Southwest Licking Local School District: Students in kindergarten and grades 1-5 with last names A-K start Aug. 14. Students in grades 6 and 9 also start Aug. 14. Students in kindergarten and grades 1-5 with last names L-Z start Aug. 15 along with all all middle and high school students that day. All students will be in classes by Aug. 18.

When do students in Madison County return to school?

  • London City Schools: All students return Aug. 13.

  • Jefferson Local Schools: All students start Aug. 18.

  • Jonathan Alder Local Schools: All students return Aug. 21

  • Madison-Plains Local School District: All students in grades 1-12 and girls in kindergarten start Aug. 20. Boys in kindergarten start Aug. 21. All kindergarteners will be in class Aug. 22.

What day do students in Pickaway County go back to school?

  • Circleville City School District: All students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 14. Preschoolers and kindergarteners with last names A-L start Aug. 19. Preschoolers and kindergarteners with last names M-Z start Aug. 20. All preschoolers and kindergarteners will be in class Aug. 21.

  • Logan Elm Local School District: Students in kindergarten and grades 1, 3, 5, 6, and9 and 11 start Aug. 14. All students in grades 2, 4, 7, 8, 10 and 12 start Aug. 15. All students on Aug. 18.

  • Teays Valley Local Schools: All students in kindergarten and grades 1-9 start Aug. 13 and all students in grades 10-12 start Aug. 14. Preschool students start Aug. 18.

  • Westfall Local School District: Students in grades 1-6 and grade 9 start Aug. 13. Kindergarteners with last names A-K and students in grades 7-8 and 10-12 start Aug. 14. Kindergarteners with last names L-Z start Aug. 15.

When do classes resume in Union County school districts?

  • Marysville Exempted Village School District: Students in grades 1-8 with last names A-M and all students in grade 9 start Aug. 18. Students in grades 1-8 with last names N-Z and all high school students start Aug. 19. All students in grades 1-8 will be in classes by Aug. 20. Kindergarten readiness appointments will take place Aug. 18 through Aug. 20 and all kindergarten students will start class Aug. 21.

  • Fairbanks Local School District: All students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 20. Preschoolers and kindergarteners start Aug. 25.

  • North Union Local Schools: All students in grades 1-12 start Aug. 12. Kindergarteners with last names A-G start Aug. 12, kindergarteners with last names H-N start Aug. 13 and kindergarteners with last names O-Z start Aug. 14. All kindergarteners will be in class together by Aug. 15.
