Both helicopters owned by the Kansas Highway Patrol could be seen circling the Kansas Statehous during the late morning of Sept. 26 in downtown Topeka.
The copters were taking part in a “photo flight,” said April McCollum, public information officer for the KHP.
“The photo flight was conducted to capture airborne images of KHP helicopters for publication purposes,” she said. “The location was selected to include the downtown Topeka skyline.”

There was no emergency, and the helicopters were not responding to a call, McCollum said.

Neither the Topeka Police Department nor the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office possess helicopters.
The police department discontinued its helicopter program in December 2009.
