A woman got lost in the dark and became stuck in a swamp in Massachusetts, officials said. Fortunately, her story has a a happy ending.
On Wednesday, Nov. 12, first responders responded to reports of a woman who couldn’t get out of a swampy area near the woods off Route 128 South in Manchester, according to a news release shared by the Manchester by the Sea Fire Department.
“She went out for a walk, and then it became dark really quickly,” Manchester by the Sea Fire Department Chief James McNeilly told ABC affiliate WCVB. “She lost her way.”
One struck of luck was that she was able to call for help and be tracked by GPS — and, as night descended, she also had a flashlight to assist her, the outlet reported.
The unidentified woman was eventually rescued with the help of What3Words, a technology that divides areas into 10-foot squares, with each square receiving a unique three-word address, officials said in their news release.
“When somebody calls 911, it goes through a rapid S.O.S. system and gives them three words,” McNeilly told WCVB. “So, every 10-by-10 square feet has a specific three words. So, it could be any random three words, you know? Marshmallow, sun, red.”
The missing woman’s location was “jockey-examples-state,” according to the outlet.
McNeilly added that the technology can save rescue teams hours while searching for missing persons.
The woman was found deep within the swamp, with police officers guiding crew members from the fire department to the safest location to extricate her, according to officials.
The Manchester by the Sea Fire Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further comment.
