A construction worker has died after falling 50 feet down a hole on Thursday morning.
It happened at 605 W. 30th Street just before 9 a.m.
Police say the worker was on the ground floor when he fell about five stories into the hole underground.
He was rescued and rushed to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive his injuries.
The NYC District Council of Carpenters identified the victim as 52-year-old Jorge Sanchez.
He leaves behind a wife and four children. He immigrated from Honduras in the 1990s and was three years away from retirement.
Sanchez was working on what is commonly known as the Gateway Tunnel and was employed by the New York Concrete Corporation.
All work is suspended while the incident is investigated.
Paul Capurso, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, NYC District Council of Carpenters, released the following statement:
“This morning, we suffered a heartbreaking loss at the Gateway Tunnel project with the passing of one of our union brothers. There are no words strong enough to express the pain and sadness we all feel. He was more than a carpenter. He was part of our family, a brother who stood shoulder to shoulder with us every day to build something bigger than ourselves. On behalf of the New York City District Council of Carpenters, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this devastating time. The union is taking steps to support his family and ensure they feel the strength and solidarity of their union community. That’s what it means to be part of this brotherhood–when one of us is lost, we come together to honor their life and stand with their loved ones.”
